The University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) will comprehensively review the UFLI Foundations' explicit and systematic phonics program. This will include a brief overview of the program, a review of essential background knowledge needed for implementation, and an overview of the manual and materials needed. Each lesson step will be covered in-depth with an opportunity to practice the newly learned strategies. Finally, there will be a brief overview to progress monitoring and differentiation.

This learning opportunity will provide participants with the information required to implement the UFLI Foundations effectively in their classrooms.

UFLI Presenters were directly involved in the development of the UFLI program and are working with the University of Florida.

Candy Plasschert

Candy Plasschaert is an Implementation Specialist at the University of Florida Literacy
Institute (UFLI). She holds degrees in elementary and special education, and
educational leadership. She is on her way to becoming a triple Gator graduate as she is
currently pursuing a PhD in special education at UF. Her research focuses on emergent
literacy-based professional development for early childhood teachers. Candy has
served in several different educational roles such as an early childhood teacher, an
early literacy coach, and an early literacy content developer. She loves training
educators in the UFLI Foundations program because of its meaningful, visible impact on
children’s early literacy skills. Outside her passion for literacy, she loves spending time
with her family, friends, and her miniature dachshund.

Elizabeth Robbins

Elizabeth Robbins is an educator and literacy advocate with degrees in elementary and
special education, including a doctorate from the University of Florida. She has served
as a general and special educator, literacy interventionist, instructional coach, and
professional development leader. Her research has focused on teachers’ experiences
with implementing UFLI Foundations. Elizabeth joined the UFLI team in 2024, bringing
her passion to empower educators, center their voices, and walk alongside them on
their implementation journey.
